Marjorie Salley Roe (Zelma Payne, James Robert Payne, Thomas John Payne, Isah Payne), of Cushing, Oklahoma has related that she believed the Payne family had Indian ancestry and that the name was something like Isa-hah.

In a note on the family of Isah Payne, Ancestry.com OneWorldTree, ID I0067, it is stated (Author Unknown):

Name:  Isah Payne

Birth: 1810, Tennessee,   Death : WFT (Est. 1850-1901)

Note:  I have found Isah Payne in the 1840 Census in Ark.  I have Sarah Paine on the 1850 census in Ark.  They have basically the same children listed and later in 1860, Sarah is listed with her son George Payne.  I believe that this Isah Payne is the same as Isaac Payne born @ 1810 in Tenn.   I found that one in Smith Co. Tenn.  I currently believe that James Payne and wife Susan are his parents and that William Payne and Rachel Nave are his grandparents.  I am working in the Indian records.  Rachel Nave, William Payne, James and Susan Payne, and John I. Payne are all listed in these records.  I am trying to determine if John I. Payne is Isah-Isaac, Isaha Payne.  This Isah may be Isaac who is supposed to be a brother of Dolly Madison.  He would have been in the home of his uncle Robert and Anne Burton Payne while in Tenn.  Anne is the widow Payne who had the first courthouse and whose daughter married Mamaduke Williams.

Marriage:  Sarah Holland, b. 1810 in Tennessee .  Marriage :WFT Est. 1826-1858
