Alexander U. Strong, oldest son of Jesse C. and Eliza Bruin Strong was born Sept 18, 1851 and passed away October 7, 1932 aged 81 years and 19 days.
His boyhood was spent on the farm in the neighborhood public schools, Bloomingdale Academy and Ladoga seminary.
As a boy he was unusually conscientious - a trait which developed into a deep religious inclination and caused him at the age of 19 to seek membership in the Bethany Church.
A friend of his, Sophronia Ellen McCampbell, joined the church at the same service. This acquaintanceship ripened into love and they were married May 20, 1874. Their unity in Christian experience and aspirations made their home one of definite Christian influence which continued for 58 years of their married life.
Throughout his entire life, A.U. Strong was entrusted with public and religious responsibilities.
He taught in the County schools and was superintendent of his Sunday School from early manhood to only a few years ago.
For several years he was president of the Parke County Sunday School Association and was an elder in his church for nearly 40 years. He was instrumental in organizing the Guion Presbyterian Church.
As one of its elders he was a wise counsellor for the ministery and a faithful executive in his work with the congregation.
Mr. Strong was a faithful neighbor and was always ready with his help in sickness and distress liberal in time, counsel and financial assistance as the occasion demanded.
He was especially prominent in the temperance movement for several years. The entire life of this man was spent in the Guion community of Parke County with the exception of 8 years in California. While Mr. Strong was in public life more than the average man his work was in the founding and building a home.
Eight children were born to the union, 6 having reached maturity. These and 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren are living and remember Father and Mother Strong, their devotion to each other and their happy romance.
