John served in the Union Army. He first enlisted in Company "G" of the 8th
Virginia Infantry under Capt. James L. Cassady on Oct. 24, 1861, at Mud River,
(W)VA. On June 8, 1862, at the battle of Cross Keys he was shot in the leg
and taken prisoner by the Confederate forces. He was discharged from the Army on May 24, 1863 at a camp near Weston, WV. He re-enlisted in the Army on August 22, 1864 and served in Company "M" 7th WV Volunteer Cavalry. He was discharged a second time on June 3, 1865 .(Hardesty's, Vol. 7, P. 98)
John owned land in Lincoln Co., WV per 1870 census. 1870 Lincoln Co. census shows 9 children. 1880 Lincoln Co. census shows 6 children and 1 grandchild, Charles. Charles may have married Amanda Stowers.
1900 Lincoln Co. census shows John (72) and Sarah A. (73).
Their marriage 19 Dec. 1849 in Kanawha Co. (W)VA is verified.
John's birthplace is either Logan Co. or Raleigh Co. WV.
We do not have the death date of either John or Sarah. We know that the Army pension that John was receiving ceased in June 1907, so we must assume that he died sometime before that date. We do not know where either of them is buried. The Lincoln Co. Courthouse burned in 1910 and all records were destroyed which makes it difficult to trace them.
