ACKER, Mary Charlotta (I36090735943)

358 "He was raised on a farm in Washington County. During his b
oyhood he learned the printer's trade, first following it in connection with the Brenham Inquirer. In the year 1881 he located in Rockdale, and became connected with the old Rockdale Messenger, and after the consolidation of the Reporter and Messenger he continued up to 1913. There were short intermissions in which he farmed, having acquired a farm six miles south of town. When Woodrow Wilson was elected president, Mr. Shapard received the appointment to the postmastership of Rockdale, over a large field of applicants, among the number being some of our most prominent citizens. He was reappointed in 1916, and during the four years and a half in which he administered the affairs of the office, he gave universal satisfaction and greatly strengthened the ties of personal friendship which bound him to the community."
SHAPARD, John Alfonso (I36090735021)

359 "Joe Shapard enlisted in the army at Fort Sam Houston in Au
gust, 1917, and was assigned to Motorcycle Company No. 1 and sent abroad for active service. On arrival overseas he was transferred to the motor transport service, American Expeditionary Forces, where he has proven of such value as to have received favorable mention in a letter from his captain to authorities in Washington, D.C. He is of unusual physical strength, and previous to entering the army was assistant postmaster at Rockdale." He was separated from military service 1 Jul 1919 at Camp Lee, VA, as a sergeant. In 1922 he joined the Los Angeles Police Force, with which he served until his retirement in 1955.
