2502 | [Helmick's from online.FTW] [Fair Sabra & Abraham Helmick.FTW] [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 5, Ed. 1, Tree #1718, Date of Import: Feb 6, 2000] John served in the Union Army. He first enlisted in Company "G" of the 8th Virginia Infantry under Capt. James L. Cassady on Oct. 24, 1861, at Mud River, (W)VA. On June 8, 1862, at the battle of Cross Keys he was shot in the leg and taken prisoner by the Confederate forces. He was discharged from the Army on May 24, 1863 at a camp near Weston, WV. He re-enlisted in the Army on August 22, 1864 and served in Company "M" 7th WV Volunteer Cavalry. He was discharged a second time on June 3, 1865 .(Hardesty's, Vol. 7, P. 98) John owned land in Lincoln Co., WV per 1870 census. 1870 Lincoln Co. census shows 9 children. 1880 Lincoln Co. census shows 6 children and 1 grandchild, Charles. Charles may have married Amanda Stowers. 1900 Lincoln Co. census shows John (72) and Sarah A. (73). Their marriage 19 Dec. 1849 in Kanawha Co. (W)VA is verified. John's birthplace is either Logan Co. or Raleigh Co. WV. We do not have the death date of either John or Sarah. We know that the Army pension that John was receiving ceased in June 1907, so we must assume that he died sometime before that date. We do not know where either of them is buried. The Lincoln Co. Courthouse burned in 1910 and all records were destroyed which makes it difficult to trace them. Buried in Johnson Cemetery, Kincaid, WV. Lived on Loop Creek. Died of TB. Had 2 Children. Fayette Co. Death Records indicate that he died of consumption and give his wife's name as "Nancy" Bays. Was he married twice? The two children were: Allen L. Bays b. in 1851 and Araminte G. Bays b. in 1864. Araminte m. Isaac A. Radford 22 Feb. 1872 in Fayette Co., WV. Radford was a butcher at Deepwater. On the night of 11 Nov., 1893, he was shot and killed in an attempted robbery by three men: Wash Adkins, William A. Burwell and Charles Bays. Wash Adkins was hanged for the deed on 20 July 1894 and the other two men were sentenced to life in prison at Moundsville. The man they killed, Mr. Radford, was uncle to Charles Bays. Charles was the s/o Allen L. Bays (above). Allen had married Mildred A. Milden Adkins 01 Nov., 1874. According to records, she was the widow of John F. Adkins at the time of their marriage. Since her married name was Adkins, presumably there was some relationship to the Wash Adkins who killed Radford. Charles Bays is a very distant cousin.
